If you still have T12 lighting you should definitely convert to T8 or possibly T5. There isn't just one option when you consider retrofitting from T12 to T8. T8 lights are brigher than T12, which in some applications is great. In other applications the extra light from T8s is not needed or wanted. In these cases you should consider the using the low watt ballasts. The mainline manufactuers all make a LW ballast. These low watt ballast have a lower ballast factor, typically around .77 compared to a .88 normal light ballast. The low watt ballasts use less wattage and will drive the lights less than a normal ballast, resulting in lower light levels. With the LW ballasts you can use the 800 series lights and still get approximately the same light levels as T12s, but you get in excess of 40% savings compared to approximately 33% when using normal light ballast. One of our favorites is to use the low watt ballasts with "super" (high lumen) T8 5000K lights. This gives a much more natural bright look and reduces energy levels on a 4 lamp fixture approx 43% Other options for T12 retrofits are reducing the number of lamps, while using high output ballasts and "super" T8 light bulbs. By using 2 T8s in place of 3 T12s you can get same light levels, and reduce maintenance costs significnatly because you are only changes 2/3s of the original number of bulbs. The consumer switching to T8 lighting from T12 really has a lot of options. They can choose to maximize light levels, energy savings or trade off somewhere between the two. We provide a free evaluation of your lighting, cost to retrofit using different options, and an energy savings estimate. |

Idaho Power has a special promotion going where they have temporarily increased the rebates for lighting conversions. Most of the rebates are doubled!! The rebates are only good till Dec 15, 2008. See link below for details. http://www.idahopower.com/pdfs/energycenter/EasyUpgrades/LightingRetrofitIncentivePromotion.pdf The time to convert your fixtures to more efficient lighting is now. The price is never going to be lower than it will these next few months with the extra rebates. Many of the T12 to T8 retrofits are now under 3 year payback periods, and pulse-start metal halide retrofits are under 2 years. |

Idaho Power will be temporarily increasing their rebates for the Easy Upgrades program for lighting retrofits. The higher rebates will be only effective from July 1, 2008 to Dec 15, 2008. The exact amount of the new rebates should be announced in the next couple of days. Even under the current rebate program converting from T12 to T8 lighting makes a tremendous amount of sense and normally will provide a guaranteed internal rate of return in excess of 20%. With the higher rebates this return will only go higher and the payback will get shorter. Businesses who still have T12 lights that don't convert to T8 now may well be missing the cheapest time EVER to convert their lighting. |

We recently completed a project in Nampa Idaho at a church's gym where we converted the existing 400 watt probe-start metal halide to a more energy efficient 320 pulse-start metal halide. We were able to complete the work in one day. The customer is going to save approximately 20% in energy costs, and just as importantly have less maintenance costs. The lights are in a gym and require a 32' lift to reach. The pulse-start metal halide bulb's average longer life is going to mean less lift rentals for the client. The bulbs used are also warrantied for 2 years and the ballast for 5 years.
Besides just the longer life, the pulse-start metal halide bulbs have better color rendering and have better lumen maintenance.
Pulse-start metal halide can be a very good energy efficient upgrade to traditional metal halide and many times is much more affordable than T5s. |
